Lesson #23: Be yourself. [Oh, yeah, and don't lie.]

When things are good– really good– you can put the weird things about yourself out there and feel OK about it. Like the fact that he knows all the lyrics to the totally ghetto song “Bounce” by Timbaland. [Ha.] Or the fact that you simply can’t sleep without at least one foot outside the covers, sometimes two, and that any bed you sleep in pretty much looks like a disaster zone come morning. Teasing is an almost certain consequence of these kinds of disclosures, but hey, these things make you who you are, and in the end, maybe they’re endearing.

It reminds me a little bit of the movie “High Fidelity,” when John Cusack’s character is talking about the top five things he misses about his woman:

“And five; she does this thing in bed when she can’t get to sleep, she kind of half moans and then rubs her feet together an equal number of times… it just kills me.”

Weird, quirky, yes. But endearing, no? It’s the little, kind of weird things like this that identify us, differentiate us from others around us, and consequently make people love us.

Now I completely want to watch that movie.

Just bought High Fidelity (the book) — I’ve never read it or seen it, so now I’m totally stoked to start reading. Weird, quirky and endearing sounds right up my alley.

I agree.. BE YOURSELF. It’s not important to impress somebody but being yourself is one way of hooking up. :)
